What Causes a Spongy Brake Pedal?

When you have to stop your vehicle, you should feel a firm pressure when you depress the brake pedal. If your brakes feel spongy or soft, this indicates that there is a problem somewhere in the braking system. Brakes usually feel spongy because of a loss of brake fluid. However, the fluid can be lost from several locations.

If there is air in the brake line or if there is a small hole in the brake line, fluid can leak out causing the pressure in the brake line to be lacking. If brake cylinders or brake calipers become corroded or damaged, they may begin to leak brake fluid. A leaking master cylinder that holds the brake fluid is a major problem.

If you are driving around the Troy area and feel that your brakes might be soft, contact our service center here at Carbone Subaru. The technicians in our service center can do a brake inspection and recommend appropriate measures.
