Auto Knowledge 101: All You Need to Know About Gaskets

Your vehicle comes with hundreds of gaskets, but what purpose do they serve? Gaskets are important because they bind at least two surfaces together, which prevents any fluids and gases from escaping and mixing. Most gaskets are made out of multi-level steel, but they can also be made of other durable materials, such as copper and rubber. There is a variation of gaskets that include head gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, and bearing gaskets.

Your gaskets are long-lasting, but they will need to be replaced at the first signs of wear. When you don't replace deteriorated gaskets, then it could cause significant damage that results in expensive repairs.

You can maintain your gaskets if you keep the coolant and engine levels at optimal temperatures. It can also be beneficial for your gaskets if you use a manufacturer-recommended engine oil and coolant. Bubbling and gurgling coming from under the radiator is a sign of gasket failure. Another sign of a bad gasket is a white substance that surfaces in or near the engine oil.
